Everything you need to know about cannabis edibles

As medical cannabis is expanding to more states and countries, edibles, sometimes called, medibles, are growing in popularity among patients. The increase is leading to some confusion and questions about edibles such as how companies make them, what’s available, how long before you get relief, and other tips like dosing and what to do if you eat too many. Below you’ll find answers about edibles and their potential for medicinal use.

What Are Cannabis Edibles?

Many people aren’t aware that you don’t have to smoke or vape cannabis to get the plant’s benefits. Medibles are regular foods and drinks infused with cannabis oil. Eating and drinking cannabis is safe, and the practice goes back thousands of years. In India, bhang is a part of religious ceremonies and for medicinal use. The plant’s flowers are illegal in the Middle Eastern country. But, the leaves, which they use to make bhang, is legal.

The once limited market for edibles has expanded to include a variety of products such as:

  • Brownies, cookies, and other baked goods
  • Hard candy and gummies
  • Potato chips, cheese doodles, crackers, and other salty snacks
  • Soft drinks, water, coffee, teas, and juices

The key to cannabis edibles is keeping the cooking and baking temperature under 350 degrees to preserve the THC and other compounds.

How Long Do Cannabis Edibles Take to Work?

Edibles must metabolize in the liver to take effect, and they don’t work as fast as smoking, vaporization, or sublingual tinctures. After ingesting the candy, cookies, or another infused-food item, it can take between 45 and 180 minutes for the average patient to feel the effects and find relief. However, unlike vaping or smoking, the duration is much longer, lasting between 4 and 6 hours depending on the dose.

Why Are Cannabis Edibles a Good Option for Patients?

Medibles offer accurate doses for patients compared to smoking or vaporization. Each package’s label includes the THC: CBD ratio, the number of milligrams, and serving sizes. Some dispensaries offer single-dose products and many sell products that have multiple doses in the same package. Avoid issues with overindulgence by only taking the recommended dose. Medical cannabis professionals suggest new patients start with 1-5mg per dose.

What if I Eat Too Many Cannabis Edibles?

One problem with edibles is they are often delicious. Between the taste and patients taking more than they should after an hour, it’s easy to eat too much. However, there’s no reason to panic. You can reduce the psychoactive effects without heading to the emergency room by taking these steps:

  • Take a nap
  • Talk to a trusted friend to reduce the anxiety
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Put on a TV show or movie you like as a distraction
  • Take a hot shower or bath

Most of all, remember, the effects will wear off in a few hours with no long-term consequences. If you took too many by accident, consider storing edibles in the kitchen or a locked area and keeping a similar snack nearby to munch on instead.

Cannabis edibles are an ideal choice to provide patients with pain relief and other symptom reductions over a few hours. This form of medical consumption is safe and may be a better option for patients with breathing issues or lung damage that shouldn’t smoke or vape their medicine unless specified by their health practitioner.
